It is also believed to have been established 200 years before the establishment of Vikram Samvat (3 BC). Then in the fourteenth century, Palanpur was re-inhabited by Palanshi Chauhan and got its present name.

Palanpur is believed to have been first founded by a Rajput named Prahladan of the Parmar dynasty. The area of Palanpur was gifted to him by his brother, who was the current ruler of Mount Abu. Palanpur was known as Prahladanpur because of this. Palanpur is also referred to as Prahladanpur in Jain history. Palanpur later became part of the British Raj.

At one time a strong fort was built around this city, it had seven gates. Of these gates only the Mira Gate is now (surviving) in full form. Transportation was possible only through these gates.

It is believed that Siddharraj Jai Singh, the ruler of the Solanki dynasty, was born in Palanpur.
