The Suryavanshi Gohil Rajputs faced stiff competition in Marwar. Is. In 150, they came to Sagarkantha within the limits of Gujarat and made three capitals namely Sejakpur, Umrala and Sihor. In 18-19, under the leadership of Kanthaji Kadani and Piplaji Gaikwad, the then capital of Gohil was invaded. Assuming defeat was due to the geographical location of Sihor, Maharaja Bhavsinhji Gohil established a new capital on the shores of Vaisakh Sud Trij-Akhatrij of Samvat 16 near Vadva village, 60 km from Sihor on the 18th and called it Bhavnagar. The location was chosen keeping in mind the flexibility and strategic importance of maritime trade. Naturally the city of Bhavnagar became the capital of the Bhavnagar kingdom. The town of Old Bhavnagar had a fort with gates opening to other important cities of Saurashtra. For two decades it remained an important port for trade with Africa, Zanzibar, Mozambique, Singapore and Arab countries.
Currently the members of the royal family are Maharaja Vijayrajsinh Gohil, Maharani Sanyuktakumari, Yuvraj Jayveerrajsinh Gohil and Princess Brijeshwarikumari.
