It is believed that this place was known as Anumanji in the year 6 AD. The names Amalik and later Amravati were also used for this place. The mythical Sanskrit name of Amreli was Amravali. Later, during Gaikwadi rule, when Gaikwadi suba Vitthalrao handed over the population of this village to Ramji Virdia, it is noticed that he built a pylon of this village and established the village. As part of the Gaikwad principality of Vadodara, a policy of compulsory free education was implemented in Amreli in the year 19.
